One-two punch: KO. Mountaineers defeats Miscellaneous 104-87

Vulcan Arena, Fairview -- Coming from their not so inspiring defeat against Zennings, the Mountaineers were sharper this time against Miscellaneous as they look to barge in the playoffs in the coming weeks.

The Mountaineers also welcomed Marion Pacete as he is back from injury. The no less than three weeks delay put a dent on the teams chances but is nevertheless upbeat with his return.

Despite wanting to take things slow, the Mountaineers matched their opponents energy and scored 28 points against Misc 24 in the opening quarter.

They had their biggest scoring quarter in the second as they poured 35 points compared to Miscs 28 to have a 63-52 lead at the half.

They continued their pace in the third and put a stamp on 'd' as they scored 23 points compared to 13 leading by 21 points 86-65 entering the fourth.

The Mountaineers defeated Miscellaneous for the final score of 104-87.

The one-two punch of Fillmore Sabangan and Renald Geonanga pulled out the guns as Saba notched 24 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists without a turnover in 32 minutes of play. Renald had a double-double with 21 points and 18 rebounds in 10-14 field goal shooting in 29 minutes of action.

"I think the league recognizes that these two are productive," Eric Medroso said, who led the Misc in scoring with 19 points.

He was supported by the all-around play of Alexes Sepanton with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists while Jacint Farres and Pedro Turini scored 17 and 16 points, respectively.

"I'm proud of our guys, each win is important as we try to compete in the playoffs with the players we have on the floor," GM Nicolo Maro said.

In particular, he cited that their young backcourt is improving as Claude Regala scored 12 points in 5-7 field goal shooting in 20 minutes. However, the Mountaineers lost him for a week with an injury.

"Just bad lack for us," GM Maro noted.

The Mountaineers shot more than 50% from the field, but was bad from the free throw line also converting just 50% of their attempts (13-26). They outrebounded Misc (54 to 35) and dished out more assists (29 to 20).

The Mountaineers will face Great 8 1st seed So Awkward Players and coming from behind team Bugo HeadCrackers. It will be a tough week as one is currently the second best team in the league while the other is looking to overtake the Mountaineers in their idle 5th seed place.

Player of the game: Renald Geonanga - 21 points and 18 rebounds.
X-factor: Fillmore Sabangan - 24 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists.

Notes:
Injury bug is really killing the Mountaineers. After welcoming the return of Marion, they lost Regala. Teodosio Amante is also in the injured list. Oh well. They are used to their blown, lost chances because of (un)timely injures.
