Train a U21 player? What's in it for me?
Quite a bit! Unlike the National Team, any manager in any league has the means to train a U21 worthy player. And there are real and tangible benefits to do so:
1. Increased merchandise money for your team. That's right, you get more merchandise money every week that your player is on the team. Seriously, you get paid for it.
2. Owning a quality young player. At the end of spending four seasons training a rookie, you will have a young, well trained, and valuable player. This is a player that will not depreciate in skills for at least 12 more seasons, a player that you may be able to continue training as some freakish monster superstud, or a player whose youth and skills will command a premium price on the transfer list. There are no bad options having a player with youth and ability!
3. Play the game better Especially for new or lower division managers, training a U21 player is an excellent way to learn the details and skills of the game and become a better manager. 48 minute single-position training, game shape management, and understanding training pops and the elastic effect are just some of the more advanced game skills that you master when training a U21 prospect.

Sounds too good to be true. What's the catch?
The catch is that there is no guarantee that your player will be put on the team. Even if you follow this guide and meet all the minimums for a U21 quality player, there are only 18 roster spots each season and usually only 10-12 players play in the majority of games. But that doesn't mean you've failed if your player isn't selected! Points 2 and 3 above will still hold true...you will have a great player and be a better manager for having trained him.

I'm sold! What kind of player do I need?
You to either draft or buy the right kind of player:
1. Guard
-18 year old
- At least perennial all-star (7) potential
- Ideally 30 skill points in the 6 guard skills
2. Big Man
- 18 year old
- At least superstar (8) potential
- Ideally 19 skill points in the IS/ID/RB/SB skills
3. Small Forward
- 18 year old
- At least all-star (6) potential
- Ideally 50 skill points overall

What kind of trainer do I need?
A level 4 (advanced) trainer is the minimum needed here. Any lower and your guy may not make reach the basic requirements by the time he's 21.

What do I train?
At the end of this posting you will find a list of common player prototypes that are likely to be considered for the U21 team, and also some directions on the best way to train them. Keep in mind that these guidelines are the minimum to be considered and that once the minimums are met you should contact your U21 scout or the U21 coach for further direction.

How do I train?
Your player will need to play at least 48 minutes at the training position each week. He will need to be trained single position (i.e. only at PG for passing) whenever possible for the most efficient training.

What's the big deal about game shape?
Game shape significantly affects a player's performance, and the U21 coach will not consider any player in less than 8 game shape for the team. Players already on the team will likely not be played if not in 8 or 9 game shape. Not only is this important when the player is 21, coaches will look to see how a player's minutes were managed in previous seasons to see that a manager understands the concept.

I'm the uber-competitive type. What can I do to get an edge?
Here are some things you can do to help your player look more attractive to the U21 manager (in no particular order):
1. Get primary skills significantly above the minimums.
2. Start with a player with good secondaries, Stamina and/or Free Throw.
3. Prove that you can keep your player in good game shape by managing your minutes well every week.
4. Train a player with more than the minimum potential to ensure they won't cap mid-season.

That's it? I've got a zillion more questions!
The single best way to get additional help with training a U21 player is to contact the NT Coach, just send him a message with any questions and he will assist you!

I actually used to work with fewmit, the original author of this post, on the USA U21 team. He was a great U21 coach and this is very helpful U21 information here though it is more specific to the USA. As the new South African U21 coach this season though, I'd like to clarify a few things stated here since it is pinned in the forum.

1) Potential and starting skills at 18 or 19 won't necessarily keep a player from making the team. While potential and starting skills are certainly important in the long run, South Africa does not have as large of a trainee pool as the USA, so even players with lower potential and starting skills may have a chance of making the South African team, if trained well. This means that many of the specific instructions in this post around starting skills and player types, while ideal, do not apply to us here. With a small pool of players coming in each season, we simply have to make the most out of what we have.

2) When in doubt about your player, just train (and contact the U21 coach)! As noted in the first point, don't worry if you can't reach one of the listed player types. Work with the U21 coach to come up with the best possible outcome for your specific player. Even if you're more interested in experimenting with a certain skillset or you can only have them tag along for training with your other trainees, we can make that work as long as they're getting some sort of training. Essentially, we have a little more flexibility in the training to make the most out of each player though the U21 or National Team coach may have specific training plan recommendations based on the team's needs.

3) Hire a level 4 Youth Trainer when training 18 and 19 year olds. This post was originally made before the introduction of Youth Trainers so I would highly recommend that all trainers have at least a level 4 (advanced) Youth Trainer in addition to a level 4 Trainer. The Youth Trainer only impacts training of 18 & 19 year olds so you can fire him after your trainees hit age 20+.

Is there anything else I can do to help with the U21 or National Teams?

1) Invest in the draft! Since we only get a small batch of new players each draft, the better invested managers are in the draft, the better the U21 and National Team talent pipelines will be. For those in D.II, because you're playing with so many bots, your draft investment gives you a higher chance at the top tier players. For those in D.I, drafting a good player is typically a double win for yourself and the country as it takes away that good trainee from another country. Even if you don't plan to train, good trainees can bring back a solid profit.

2) Sell players that you aren't planning to train.
Since the pool is limited, it's very important to try to sell any prospects you draft that you aren't planning to train. This will allow other managers to pick them up and train them. I'd also recommend connecting with the U21 coach to see if they have any prospective buyers.

3) Update the U21 coach and National Team coach of your players' progress each week, if they're not on the team. In the beginning of the season, National Team coaches scout out player skills by calling them up. After a week or two into the season, coaches can no longer do this without it negatively impacting the team's enthusiasm so they won't have a way to check on your players' updated skills during the season. So if you have a player that you think has a chance to make the team, please be proactive and share their skills with the appropriate coach after each training update.

4) Stay connected by reading the forums, responding to BB-Mails and/or joining the Discord! The teams will ultimately only be as good as the training and support of you all, the South African managers. The Discord is new but it can be a hub for better communication, training advice and game planning. (https://discord.gg/CrzH7AQPYs)
