Follow that Season 38! An exciting season 37 saw the red side get very English, with each team insisting their opponent win this week and the entire conference ending up with an identical 11-11 record while the blue side gouged each other to bits until the Wasps were the last men standing.
Well, not quite, but not far off the truth. In the end, it was the Erks who emerged from the pack to challenge the Wasps, leading to a memorable game 2 of the finals that saw triple OT decide that there would, after all, be a game 3. And the Wasps won that after controlling, if not quite dominating, the blue side for the second season running.
In the tournament, or 'cup' as we might call it, Vecx decided the Firemen trophy cabinet needed a fresh look and so quietly added his 4th cup to the display. Not bad for a rebuilding team helping its franchise star Innes polish up his retirement speech before he contemplates a new career as a Master Glazier. Yes, the inception of Luke Innes Glass Ltd cannot be far away but in the mean time the 35 year legend will lead the firemen in a quest for more silverware one more time.
Looking at the salaries, the Tallfellas somewhat bizarre decision to spend £5m on two veterans before a relegation series and so help the monkeys take a break from the EBBL sees them up to third in the salary table, although nearly 60% of that is on Osman and Big Mac, so probably not a true picture of a contender, more like a vivid example of extremely unbalanced roster construction. Gauson is this season's early big spender, which suggests there may be plenty of new twists in the tale ahead.
As well as a fond farewell to the Monkeys, we also said 'see ya later' to the unlucky Arab City, the unfiltered T20Cricketers and the unabashed Club Deportivo.
So here we go for Season 38 - and a warm welcome to the EBBL for the London Kings and a nod and a welcome back to the Camborne Crusaders, Leeds City Ballers and CWA Fury, who may or may not have mellowed a bit since they were last seen in these parts. Remember, this season six, oops make that five, of us relegate...
Let's talk cash... salaries as of time of post... there's quite a lot of rebuilding going on so no doubt it will look different next week...
