I would argue that the NBA season contains too many games for the purpose it serves. After 82 games, over half the league is still in the running to win and are theoretically on even footing as no byes are awarded in the play-offs.
Aside from arguments over the fairness of having so many games to eliminate so few teams, the players rarely get a chance to properly rest during such a congested season.
If only money wasn't a driving factor towards squeezing all the extra games onto the schedule. I think dropping the regular season to 76 games would be better for the players, and slightly increase the value of regular season W's and L's (that's 4 games vs division rivals, 3 games vs conference teams, 2 games vs opposite conference). Maybe even go as low as 72, doing away with the concept of divisions entirely.
There's a case to be made for only letting 4 teams from each conference make the play-offs too.
