The U21 squad is doing good, I must say. 140.2 ppg? Monstrous.

Philippines powers through Singapore and retains top spot in Asia U21 Championship pool C.

The Filipinos will be delighted to see themselves at the top of Pool C in the ongoing Asia U21 Championship. They currently lead fellow undefeated China NT in point difference.

They path to the top had been fairly easy at this point if their latest victory was any indication. Romel Salinas lead the Philippine squad with his 25 points as they dispatched Singapore with relative ease. It wasn't obvious from the start though as both teams seemed evenly matched during the opening minutes.

Both teams shot well and barely gave each other an inch. Salinas lead the team amidst a scoring duel against his counterpart Simon Macha where each player caught fire early on. Macha made 7 consecutive shots after missing his first layup to close out the first quarter with 16 points, Salinas responded with 11 points of his own.

Alvin Gayoles scored 10 of his 22 points in the second quarter to put the team at a comfortable distance and Salinas added another 8 points as Philippines pulled ahead 76 - 56 at the half.

Singapore was able to narrow down the lead to 13 in the third quarter as Macha showed up again and delivered a dazzling 18 points. But a resilient Philippine squad was not to be outclassed this time as they have showed in previous outings. Mark Montemayor scored 16 points in the resulting quarter as he carried the Filipinos to victory until the final buzzer.

Philippines had three players with 10 or more rebounds including Rios and Macalinag who both had 16 rebounds apiece. They had the clear advantage in rebounding again today which included 23 offensive rebounds. Prince Flandez was the most effective teammate on the floor with 17 points and 11 boards and boasting a +38 box plus/minus in just 21 minutes of playing time.

Scores:
Philippines
Salinas 25, Gayoles 22, Montemayor 20, Rios 18, Flandez 17, Ocampo 13, Macalinag 9, Carbon 9, Guardia 6, Valerio 4, Gotardo 2, Lagare DNP-CD

Singapore
Macha 42, Eng Kong 21, Ah Eng 19, Jidang 7, Min Beng 6, Leslie 4, Jian Beng 2, Hui Fu 2, Soon Yeng 2, Yao Yau 0

Quarters:
36 - 35 | 76 - 56 | 105 - 89 | 145 - 105

Thanks bouges!

I am really proud of today's match. Malaysia used the same tactic than last week against China. They won by 6. We won by 23.
It means nothing related to our match next Monday but it's a good sign on how can we grow with training and shape.
Taiwan is impressive. Pure dominance. China is stronger than us and maybe Australia too.
But we can fight against anyone if players are in shape 😊
So guys keep in mind that this week is the all star week but the target is the same: 50 to 70 minutes for your u21 player!

PH edges past Malaysia 89-66, sets up clash with undefeated China next week.

A week before they potentially face one of the toughest teams in the tournament, Philippines kept their focus as they ran Malaysia aground 89-66 last Monday to the tune of 37 points from Mark Montemayor.

Both teams remained relatively competitive as both teams fought tooth and nail, Malaysia even took the lead 20-22 on Anak Katem's jumper early in the second quarter. The game was close as Philippines was only ahead by seven entering the final quarter but the Filipinos decided to make a stand and a purposeful effort to take the lead permanently behind Mark Montemayor's 18 points including four triples. The team made 50% from the floor and outscored the opposition 31-15. Meanwhile Malaysia was in the wrong side of a shooting spree and shot just 29% in return during the final period. This proved to be the decisive point that allowed the young Filipinos to rally to victory heading to the final buzzer.

Montemayor finished the game with 37 points to his name including the go-ahead basket that mounted the lead to seventeen with 3:21 left in the game.

Malaysia's Mark Ludlow made easy work of 17 points from under the basket but the rest of the team shot at an abysmal rate the further they shoot away from the hoop, they only made four of their eighteen three point attempts and sank just four mid-range jumpers contributing to their woeful 31% FG. They were also notoriously careless with the ball and turned it over fourteen times as they succumbed to Philippine's defensive intensity which lead to their demise.

Scores:
Philippines
Montemayor 37, Ocampo 22, Macalinag 8, Flandez 8, Salinas 5, Rios 4, Gayoles 2, Guardia 2, Gotardo 2, Carbon 0, Valerio DNP-CD, Lagare DNP-CD

Malaysia
Ludlow 17, Tingjiang 11, Yombulin 9, Anak Katem 7, Xiangyan 7, Anandhakrishnan 5, Kuanzhi 4, Mache 3, Salemon 2, Vincent 1, Runwen DNP-CD, Anak Malang DNP-CD

Quarters:
20 - 18; 39 - 38; 58 - 51; 89 - 66

I am disappointed. Today's match was an up and down.
Up: our ratings were cool.
Down: our offense was terrible despite a higher rating.
Up: Salinas and Ocampo deleted Chinese sg 1/16 from the field)
Down: gayoles has been out powered by Chinese pg.
Up: we clinched another gdp
Down: they did it too

In our last appearances against China in first round we have always been defeated badly. Over 20 points so this -17 is a little progress but that doesn't satisfy me at all since I was fairly convinced to be underdog but in a close game. Not this way.
So I am disappointed but we need to go over this and focus on the next matches.
Second round should be designed as follows:
1. China Malaysia Japan Lebanon Taiwan and iran
2. Philippines Indonesia Australia UAE Hong Kong and New Zealand

Our group is weaker but well balanced while the other has two clear favorites in China and Taiwan.

Tomorrow we will see the schedule. Fingers crossed to clinch a medal!

Philippines struggles to get past China's great wall, concedes five game win streak 63 - 46

Despite holding China to their tournament's lowest scoring output, and despite scoring an average of 123 PPG, the Philippines were unable to capitalize on offense. The team made 23% of their total attempts and was held to a season low five points in the opening quarter.

Undeterred by their struggles in offense the team made a concerted effort to keep the game interesting on the other end. The Filipino guards clamped down on Bang Dongxiang, one of China's most effective trigger man, limiting him to one field goal in eight tries forcing China to look for other means to score. Unfortunately the rest of the group was just too much to handle. Point man Mu Jianyang lead the Chinese squad with a well-balanced effort -- 16 points two steals and made his shots mostly from inside the shaded area. Forward Ma Yongda was close behind with 14 points and racked up 11 boards as both players ran the show to augment China's bid for a top spot.

Howell Rios scored 12 points and was the only player to score in double digits for the Philippines, the rest of the team struggled heavilly against an equally resilient Chinese squad. Wing man Benedict Lagare scored 9 points but took him ten attempts to get it. He also had three of the team's 16 turnovers. Center Prince Flandez was limited to five rebounds by China's Dragon, Dampildorg Bora as he himself grabbed 10 rebounds against Flandez.

Regardless of this setback, the Philippines qualifies for the next round with five other teams reshuffled into the pool of nations. The Philippines have been drawn into Pool E and is drafted with other powerhouse nations like Australia and Hong Kong.
