They will learn who the star is once the same guys keep playing as starters.

Even if you buy a great player, he needs time with the team for the fans to believe he is a starter. Then, provided you keep him outside of the transfer list (him and the main 6-7 players), that fan survey field will improve.

Of course, the more US players the better the merchandise money you will get, but that I think is seperate with the fan survey.

My point of view is that the less stars/BBs the less afraid the fans would be of a player being transfer, so the fans actually like the team's roster.

I am only saying that because I have been playing a month or so and I started with 4 stars in this category if I`m not mistaken, 4-5 weeks later and my team is lot better than the starter team I received and the stars are dropping weekly, it is at 2 stars now. That kept me thinking for a while and the conclusion I have at least, is what I said in the beginning of the post.
