for some reason I remember reading that only competitive games count towards experience


Just highlighting this so it stands out a little more:

Does anybody know if this is true?

Scrimmages count towards exp. 100% sure.

Also, just giving a player minutes isn't enough. You have to feature the player in some way, too. They have to be productive minutes to work best.
