Saturday Night Thriller Recaps
Not sure how you can be the highest rated player and only take 3 shots (here’s looking at you, Terry Armstead)...really annoyed by my offensive woes. At any rate, it was a bit intriguing having Big 8's 1 vs 2, 3 vs 4, 5 vs 6, 7 vs 8 and Great 8 almost the same in matchups (1 vs 2, 3 vs 6, 6 vs 4, and 7 vs 8). Couple of games looked to go down to the wire - here are those quick recaps:

War Birds vs. Seattle SuperSonicz
Big 8 Cellar Dwellers provided a good show, with War Birds falling one point shy of Seattle SuperSonicz. The Birds found themselves down 3 after three quarters. Seattle hit two quick shots to increase the lead to 7 and then War Birds backup SG C. Alexandru threw the ball away, but fortunately, made up for it by corralling a defensive rebound and then stemmed the immediate threat by hitting a three for his first points of the game, cutting it back to four. With just under 9 minutes left, Collin McMahon continued his hot night by nailing a three to cut the lead to 1, but SuperSonicz were getting more shots off in the final period, including a lucky three ball from center Jarkes. Ramunas Kiaulius (Birds PG) answered with a three from the corner, to make it 80-81, Seattle. With just over 6 and a half minutes, McMahon slammed the ball down to put the Birds up by one. Seattle called a time out to gather itself and try to not squander this game, but coming out of the break, Muncy missed a layup and the Birds grabbed the board with Kiaulius hitting another three (4-4 so far in the period) to go up 4. Seattle struggled to score on the next trip down the court, and the Birds increased their lead to 6 with five minutes remaining. The teams traded back and forth missing and rebounding the ball before Birds PF C. Pirtsos fouled PF Pugejs and he ignites the SuperSoniz with two free throws. Jarkes turns around and steals the ball, laying it in on the fast break to cut the lead to 2 with four minutes remaining. SF Griffiths scored from the top of the key to put the lead back to 4 - the Birds grabbed a defensive rebound on the following possession and McMahon banked in a jumper, pushing the lead to 6, 91-85. Seattle's Jarkes responded with a three ball with 2 and a half minutes left - after a quick miss by the Birds, Seattle took a shot and missed. McMahon dishes to backup PF Benny Herron and he scored to make it a 5 point game with 1:51 left, but Seattle responded with a quick two. Down three, Jarkes stole the ball and backup SG Gregory Jordan ties it with 1:08 left with a three from the corner. A missed 3 by Birds resulted in a defensive rebound and Seattle went the other way. Jarkes response clanked off the rim and backup PG Hud Leal snagged the rebound, only for McMahon to miss a three pointer. With 15 seconds left, PF Pugejs nails a hook shot to regain the lead for Seattle. Following a 30 second time out by War Birds, and a subsequent miss, Seattle's SG Lisnevskiy is fouled and scores both free throws with two seconds left, all but sealing the win. Of course, there's a buzzer beater(!) but too little too late as the War Birds squandered a comeback 4th quarter.

I never really know what I'm wandering into when I look at a box score and see it's close and decide to recap it, but WHEW, that was a lot. A lot more buck than I bargained for and I'll bet Grimhawke is PISSED that McMahon couldn't make just, like, one more three on the night. As it was 4-6 FG and 2-4 3FG in the final frame. His PG, R. Kiaulius fared even better, going 4-4 FG and 2-2 3FG. If anything, the thing that finished them was they just didn't get as many shots off in the 4th as Seattle did and from what I can tell from the stats, that's primarily a result of fouls and turnovers (5 each in the 4th). At least it was a good, close game! Congrats to iBeStrugglin.

Saturday Night Thriller Recaps Continued

Miami Cleo vs. Żubr Biały
Miami and Zubr came into the 4th quarter tied at 57 points apiece and both teams started out the final frame COLD shooting 1-16 over the first 4:17 in the period. Once PF Shaun Hatch scored for Zubr, PG Domaon Santana responded. Hatch answered back, and then Miami's SF Marko Maurin got an assist by passing through to CHeatle for the slam. After that BARRAGE of scoring, with half of the period consumed, Miami found themselves up 1, 64-63.

Three minutes later, with the teams trading two buckets each, the score was 68-67 Miami. But nearly a minute later, Zubr's SF Sam Dickens nailed a three pointer to go up two. Maurin responded with a quick drive to even it up and on the drive by Dickens, he was fouled by Miami's Varpukevicious. Dickens sank the first free throw, but clanked the 2nd and the ball went out of bounds. Less than two minutes remaining, with Zubr now up by one with the ball - Dickens, who was finally coming on strong, scored to increase the lead to three. Varp, who'd had a good game coming into the 4th but utterly choked on himself, got a shot blocked, but fortunately, backup PG W. Graf grabbed the ball and scored to keep it close. After a turnover by center G lucas, Zubr scores but Maurin responded to keep the game at one. Unfrotunately, starting center G. Locus for Miami fouled, bringing Zubr into the bonus. Zubr, retaining the ball, missed, but grabbed the offensive board and held the ball as long as possible until Hatch shot and missed, but H. Yuyao grabbed it off the glass and touched it back in to go up three with 16 seconds left. Miami called a timeout hoping to inspire Maurin to continue his good play or to convince Varp or P. Cheatle to spark some offense as they'd both gone dark. All starters back in the lineups and D. Santana tries a threee but misses - the ball was loose but went out of bounds in favor of Miami. After another miss by Varp, and a defensive rebound, Denis Minkinen is fouled and does his duty, sinking 1-2 free throws with only one second left, again, sealing the game. Unfortunately, no buzzerbeater here, but another inspiring ending and a blown lead by a team that really needed it.

Reviewing the stats, it looked like even though Miami didn't fare much better in the 2nd quarter (16 points) Zubr failed to take advantage of the opposition's struggles and only produced 18 points themselves. Miami's shooting woes followed them most of the night, only able to hit 3 three pointers out of 15 attempts, most likely forced to take threes in their Low Post offense because of Zubr's 3-2 Zone tactic. I mentioned it in the commentary, but Miami's starting SG and PF just didn't show up in the 4th quarter with Varp missing all 6 of his shots. If Miami had pulled off the upset, they'd be in 4th place right now with Zubr knocked down to 4th and Miami's prospects looking more like a contender in relegation rather than a write off. Hopefully I'm wrong!

Week 4 Power Rankings
Almost a quarter of the way through the season, so this is a special rankings update where we examine which teams have improved the most since week one and which teams, well, haven’t. Once again, these rankings are based on a team’s game efficiency rank and their opponent allowed efficiency rank. Any ties are broken by highest efficiency rank change from last week. Also, as an aside, overall ranking is still at the front, but this week, their first week ranking will be listed in parenthesis behind the name.

1. Philly Dribble (2)
Pretty telling week for Philly, who blew out not only Dallas, but also 2nd seed Linndale to prove that they’re clearly the best of the Big 8 and it’s probably not going to be close. We have to wait another two weeks for their matchup against Gremlins and then a week later for Ashkickers, but I think it is safe to say they’ll be competing for the championship come July. They stayed steady in EFFG and improved on their OPP allowed EFFG to take over as top dog for the week.

2. Gremlins (1)
Another week, another undefeated Gremlins team at the top of the list, for the first time, not ranked 1. What did they do to deserve this? Well, a tough, but decisive win over Ashkickers came around and then they handled San Dominica Warriors, but San Dom played them almost as well as Ash. Interestingly, while their EFFG dropped slightly, they still rank highest in the league, but their OPP EFFG rank dropped a spot even though it improved, which is how they find themselves ranked 2nd for the first time. Interesting Cup matchup for them (nationally ranked 81 Bluegrass Nationals traveling to 80th Gremlins Temple of Doom, before some relatively easy matchups for them coming into next week.

3. The Ashkickers (3)
Slight drops in both EFFG and OPP EFFG this week, but they’re holding relatively steady – tough loss to Gremlins will do that to you, but a bounce-back win against Rip City Revival keeps them strong. They’re one of only three teams with a +100 point differential this season, and the next teams aren’t necessarily close. Looks to be a tough Cup matchup, though they get the game at home, before facing Lion Rebels and San Dominica next week to more than likely improve to 9-1 on the season.

4. Linndale (6)
Linndale was one of three teams after the first week of the season tied at the fourth spot, with the tie breaker going to highest EFFG, which pushed them down to 6th. But they’ve consistently proved that they belong in the playoff chase and aren’t a has been DIV IV promote. They’ve only made two moves this season, selling a rookie for a decent profit, and then bringing in Kyle Knowles at SG who has performed quite well, averaging nearly 17 PPG and a 13.0 rating in league games. Interesting matchups against fellow DIV IV promoters on the other side of the division this week, facing Beer Bellys and pintipv – are we still asking if Linndale is for real?

5. The Beer Bellys (5)
Two wins last week, including a dominate one over their closest seeded rival in pintipv brings thatguy to 5th place in this week’s rankings. They’ve continued to have an impressive EFFG for a recently promoted team, and while they’re lacking a bit in OPP EFFG (ranked 11th this week and last), at least they’re consistent about it! Two big games on the horizon against the top seeded Big 8 teams. Will they stumble?

6. Żubr Białystok (14)
The most impressive transformation for a team in our division so far this season from the 1st week til now, whitestok’s crew has moved up 5.5 points in their average ranking, which gets them to 6th from what looked to be like the start of a cellar dweller occupant. Żubr has kept fairly consistent with EFFG over the last few weeks and improved their OPP EFFG to find themselves well in the playoff pack for the Great 8. An interesting matchup against Rip City followed by the dynamic, if not, sporadic San Dominica Warrior

Week 4 Power Rankings Continued

7. Mighty Moose Rockets (4)
Hutch44’s squad looked to be fierce after one week, but has been up and down, especially with an injured Kofan for a week. A convincing win against Lion Rebels followed by a shoot out loss to Beer Bellys has us scratching our heads in wonder. Their EFFG ratings about even out which helps to explain their 3-5 record. Will they find the magic now that Kofan is back and better than ever?

8. Lion Rebels (10)
This squad will not win more than one game in a row – while they’ve only given up 100 points once, they’ve also only scored more than 100 once. At times, they’ll go entire games without hardly giving their start center the ball. Speculation is that ownership is evaluating the managers job, particularly interested in Speedtraps’ success, and may inquire about poaching him from Linndale.

9. Miami Cleo (12)
Gotta give them credit, Miami seems to be out here playing for their lives over the last two weeks, getting it back to a somewhat respectable shape almost a quarter of the way through – a tough loss to the War Birds Tuesday night, leaves them hurting – but they’ve shown some spark and are hoping to make a mark on the season in order to not relegate.

10. Rip City Revival (8)
A convincing win over San Dominica Warriors followed by a relatively narrow loss to the monster Ashkickers this week, leaves them here at 10th. Neither their EFFG or OPP EFFG is super impressive, but it is consistent. They seem like the classic beat the teams they should beat and lose to the teams they could beat, but maybe that’s just me. True to their story, they’re floating this season – will their competitive spirit kick in?

11. San Dominica Warriors (11)
Coach Stephenson’s team had a rough week, getting dominated by Rip and then having to face Gremlins – may be a moral victory by keeping them to 81 points on the night, but still, their record is suffering because of it. I still think the Big 8’s 6th – 2nd seeded teams could be a sloppy mess the whole season – “So you’re saying there’s a chance!?”

12. War Birds (9)
Grimhawke finds himself in an awkward position after narrowly losing what should have been a win against Seattle and then followed it up with a tight win against Miami. They’re facing the opposing conference cellar dwellers this next week – will they vault themselves into the thicket of mediocrity or tumble to despair?

13. Pintipv (7)
This one feels like it’s gotta hurt pintipvw. Things were looking pretty promising, but their OPP EFFG has gotten a lot worse since the first week of the season. Curious matchup against MMR before facing down Linndale at home – will they be able to right the ship and get back into the playoff chase?

14. Seattle SuperSonicz (15)
After Seattle held off War Birds comeback (or rather came back from War Birds comeback) they struggled against whitestok’s squad – but potentially winnable games next week. They actually improved their OPP EFFG while staying steady with their own EFFG.

15. Dallas Bomskwad (13)
After starting to keep a close eye on Dallas toward the end of last season as they clawed their way into the playoffs, this feels like a let down for them, but they were only 7-15 last season – still, 1-7 with a -150+ point differential hurts. A welcome first win against Weather only brought them to invite Philly into kick ass, but they, too, face the opposing conferences bottom shelf teams – perhaps they can tack on two more wins!

16. Weather Society (16)
At least you can’t say Weather didn’t try, but it does appear that they’re going to stop trying after listing their originals this week. What’s next for Melan Collie – preparing for immediate relegation and domination in DIV IV botville? Somehow they’re OPP EFFG continues to tank, nearly 13 points worse than it was after the first week of the season.

Great write-up as usual. This week I will slide bigtime I'm sure, not even going to try to win lol. Will be good training opportunities for my younglings ha ha. I'll save my normal reserves for the cup game instead, I can win that one I hope.

Shout out to Mighty Moose for a fun game this week, that was craziness!
