I think 3-2 would be a better and safer choice. I tried 1-3-1 in a scrimmage, but didnt defend very well.

In order to defend well in 1-3-1 tactics, does C need OD (or SB?) and PG need ID ?

C needs more OD than normal in all zones because of switching if the zone breaks down. In the 1-3-1 if he is playing the middle he'll defend mid range jumpers, if he is playing under the bucket he's responsible for the baseline, so he'll need to defend baseline jumpers. So yes, OD is needed.

SB for C is a plus, but not a must have or it won't work like in 2-3. He needs a lot more REB honestly for your team to overcome the REB deficiency.

PG with ID is nice if they switch and to defend drives if they don't get a switch... but SB might actually be better for the PG (and the wings as well) then for the C.

I have played 1-3-1 in my last two PL games, Dont know if you can find anything from those games but i'll share them anyway.

I found that your inside D was way worse than the outside D...
