Basically stay away from argueing, don't post into suggestion threads. These are the ways to limit your 1 balls. Posting in suggestion thread will get you atleast 1 or 2 constant forum readers who 1 ball you every 12h. Just learn to live with it, I do :D

I completely agree with this proposal.

When this system started I got one balled in the election quite often, and for what? Because they wanted the other? It seems you aren't allowed to give your opinion and that cannot be the purpose of this.

For those who don't want to see the post ratings, and who use Firefox, I just added hiding of the post rating system to my GreaseMonkey script. You can see more in Global at (145219.2).

I can understand your first point about not arguing, although some people will still find a reason to 1 ball you even if you don't argue with them. But as for the second point about not posting in suggestion threads, why should someone prohibit themselves from speaking their mind about something they feel would make the game better? The solution isn't to let habitual 1 ball raters run rampant on the message boards. It's to find a way that achieves what the goal of the rating system was supposed to be without discouraging people from posting their ideas.
The plus option someone in this thread suggested seems like a good idea, but I would take it further and offer a simple thumbs up or thumbs down for each post. Rather than a 12 hour cutoff, make it so you can only rate a post once.

That's a noble idea, but frankly it's a band-aid for what I think the true issue here is. It's not about the rating system, itself, really. It's more about the behavior.

I never claimed it to be a solution to the issue, and I don't even think there is an issue. But obviously some people think there is, and now they have an option.

Perhaps due to your status you don't suffer from 1 balling and therefore don't see a problem, but I think the fact this thread even exists shows there clearly is a problem. One thing I have noticed is status has a lot to do with how posts are rated. It seems that BB, GM, LA, or Mod in front of someone's name seems to have a psychological effect on some people. I've seen posts from GM's with no substance being 5 ball rated. The interesting thing is I see the rating appear almost as instantly as the post is posted. Almost as if GM's were allowed to rate their own posts.

Unless something has changed recently, no-one (including GMs) can rate their own posts, so that's one conspiracy theory that can be dropped from the list.

As far as the status conferred by a prefix, here's an example for you: (88034.1). All in all, I'd be surprised if there's a "prefix effect", especially a positive one.

Just my very personal observations, is all. Obviously I haven't read every post ever written on the forums, and I'm really not trying to sound like Jesse Ventura. My intention isn't to spawn conspiracy theories.
But this example you posted highlights the fact we're dealing with a behavioral issue. I mean, how in the world does a "rules" sticky get 2 and a half balls? It's a factual statement about the game rules. In all honesty, it shouldn't even be rated. Period.
