I realise what you were saying. Just throwing out an example of someone from Isaiah's era that knew what he was doing and quit while he was ahead.

More than anything, I was playing to the multitude of Celtics fans on here.

I'll quit trolling now.

I don't dispute that one bit. The Pacers were good when Larry got there. But they weren't winning any titles (in fact, right before Bird retired, he helped knock them out of the playoffs two seasons in a row). When Bird arrived, the team was already a playoff team, occasionally making it to the Eastern Conference finals. But within three years, Bird got them to the finals.

Let's not forget that when Bird quit as Pacers coach, Isaiah Thomas took over. In Thomas's first 3 seasons the Pacers all made the playoffs, but they never made it out of the first round. Following those three seasons, the Pacers made Bird president, and Larry almost immediately fired Isaiah.

edit: no need to discuss Ron Artest.

Good comparison, Kingsblade. Right now i find it hard to believe that Gretzky could ever become "hated" (in Canada), but when I look at what Isiah has done to his rep since he retired as a player....ouch!

what i would say in isiah is that he doesnt understand what he needs to do as a Gm or as a coach.

as a coach there wasnt even any development of young players, he even drafted a no name rodman wanna be wherein he got criticized and now has a potential imagine on games he can get double digits on rebs and points. but he doesnt develop the young guys . . . imagine players like david lee who still now comes off the bench infavor of zach and eddy curry.

he just like to have the big names thats why their salary cap issue was sky high. he doesnt have the confidence of offering no name guys wherein he should develop just ( in what he thinks ) in favor of hoping those big names = attendance.

plus the owner dolan thinks with all the attention his isiah is getting benefits the knicks of the attention and being talk about.

As a Gm, he doesnt know what talent is. he thinks players with bloated salary are the epitome of winning games and attendance. we all know the portland then. imagine offering that wizard player that kind of contract. . . .

larry bird as i would say doesnt coaches much in his time, he was lucky to have a coach then whom he hired when he became president and was also a reason why detroit became a hot team.

this is my own opinion.

What does being a legend have to do with it? Legendary players have failed as coaches before and legendary players will fail as coaches again.

He isn't anywhere near as legendary as Magic was. How did Magic's coaching career pan out?

While it is possible that he could become a credible coach there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to think that he is a good candidate.

Saying he would do better than Isiah is not a compliment either. I have a 3 year old daughter who I feel confident could do a better job that Isiah has.
