Philippines put an end to Italy's winning streak. Hands them 90-78 defeat behind Lelord Musa's 28 points.

The Philippines have to dig in deep after a slow start to hand Italy its first defeat in five games 90-78 last Monday at the Dallas Mavericks arena.

Despite shooting just 37% the Filipinos kept the Italians within striking distance. Lelord Musa's scintillating 28 points lead all scorers despite the rest of the team struggling as only three players scored in double figures.

Othello Dacoco
scored five consecutive points, including a wide open corner three, to start the 2nd quarter to break the 14-14 tie and put the team permanently ahead, he finished with 20 points and helped keep the Italians at bay. A rejuvenated team effort saw Philippines out-hustle Italy in the final canto 26-19 to deliver the final nail in the coffin as their opponents were unable to cut the lead below 8 entering the quarter. Filipino big men Libre and Madrigal's presence were vital as they grabbed a combined 35 rebounds to give the team an edge in the rebounding department.

The Philippines have now won their second straight game after the disappointing loss to Estonia 2 weeks ago. They are currently 3-0 when playing in front of a raucous home court.

Meanwhile Danilo Coscia paced Italy with 17 points but made only 3 of his 12 attempts from three. Star forward Danilo Marighetti had a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

The Philippines cannot rest on their laurels as they head to Europe next week to face another undefeated team in world number 2 Spain.

Salamat sa suporta coach! No definite plans yet, lets see after the season. 😉

Basta focus muna tayo in trying to win HCA for next Asian Championship. Medyo mabigat ung natapat satin na sked especially compared sa mga neighbor countries natin pero we will do our best padin. Sana makasilat tayo sa Spain for a better chance.

Tough loss against powerhouse Spain. We are now hanging by a nail in rank 30 (need to make the top 32 to reach the next round).

Next up, do-or-die game against Iran. Hoping for the best GS next week. Lets go Pinas! :)

Philippines rely on savvy veterans, defeat Iran in time for Philippine Independence Day 106 - 84

The Filipinos can now breathe a collective sigh of relief, albeit temporarily, as they improve their chances to advance to the next round of qualifying games after they survived Iran's onslaught. Amir Abarghouei and Abtin Hamidian had their own way in the paint, as Iran took 48 shots from inside the paint lead by Ghanbar Oladi's 36 point outburst and an 18 point 15 rebound perormance from Hamidian.

For the Philippines the man of the hour belongs to hotshot Amante Dorola who had 34 points, a coming out party of sorts, including six triples layered with seven assists on top. While he did most of his damage on offense, his defense was equally remarkable as he held his counterpart to a measly 5 points on one of nine shooting. Forward Othello Dacoco also dominated his match up as he added 23 points to an already impressive shooting performance by the backcourt including guard Florian Ignacio who had 22 and was the other player to score more than 20 points for the team.

Philippines wasted no time as they stepped on the gas and raced to a 10-point lead early, it was cruise control from then on and by the time the half-time buzzer sounded the Filipinos were ahead by 20. They took no time off to look back or stall the offense as an efficient 52% shooting was more than enough to snatch the victory from Iran.

The Philippine national team will now wait for news regarding their qualification for the next round. Stay tuned.
