Its kind of like watching a train wreck...you know its awful, you know the outcome, but you just can't help yourself...

haha, should have seen that coming. anyway..

The Cubs actually had at least 3 teams capable winning a world series in the past decade. 2003 (everyone remembers the Bartman game - 4 outs away from the world series), 2007 & 2008. But with the way the baseball playoffs are structured it's a complete crapshoot. literally. Go look at all the numbers & advanced metrics if you don't believe it. It's not like football or basketball where the better team will probably advance.

But not even getting into the minutia... Your Cardinals made the playoffs 6 times from 2000 through 2006. The 105 win team got swept in the World Series & the 100 win team lost 4 games to 1 in the NLCS. Yet the 2006 Cardinals (83-78) won it all...

2000 - 95 wins, lost in NLCS
2001 - 93 wins, lost in LDS
2002 - 97 wins, lost in NLCS
2004 - 105 wins, lost in WS (swept)
2005 - 100 wins, lost in NLCS (4 games to 1 IIRC?)
2006 - 83 wins, won World Series
(2007- 78 wins, losing record, not in playoffs.)

I also don't think the Cubs lose due to a lack of revenue

Yeah, money has been a complete non-factor. In 2010 the Cubs had the highest opening day payroll in the entire National League! & in 2009 spent even more than the Red Sox did...

but I think the Cubs truly do have an argument for the worst baseball franchise ever?

For large stretches of time, they're in the discussion. But not if you include their entire history. (16 NL pennants believe it or not) Here's something interesting on 10 worse franchises:(http://bleacherreport.com/articles/218738-the-top-10-wors...) (neither the Cubs nor Sox made that list.)

Even between the 2 chicago teams, the White Sox are arguably just as bad. Only 6 AL pennants & they didn't win a post season series for 98 years. More recent (1980 on)... 5 playoff appearances for the Sox, 6 for the Cubs. & have to laugh at the Sox retiring Harold Baines' number in 1989!!! He kept playing until 2001(!) & got all of 4.8% support for the Hall-of-Fame his only year on the ballot.

+1
wow, i'm impressed! & thanks for replying.

(blah, browser crashed >_< )

I've noticed a growing push for things like more night games, jumbo tron, more advertising / new ballpark, & the flat out ridiculing of many things (even as far as bashing Ron Santo before his death... easy target i guess), etc... No real way of quantifying all that, but the few text polls & such I've seen were heavily trending that way in the last couple of years.

Even ignoring the above, things seem really different post 2003. Not in a good way either. (even saw an interview with Bill Murray where he unexpectedly starts talking about new cubs fans a few years back). Well I wrote too much over 3 posts, so will just end it here, lol.

Baseball has two distinct seasons, the regular season and the playoffs.

For the regular season you need depth, on your team and organization for injuries, and guys that don't perform. The playoffs are a different matter, you really only need three good/excellent starting pitchers and maybe one guy to spot start something you cannot do in the regular season. The bench is also different as you try to match-up vs your opponent, again something you don't do in the regular season.....Been watching the Cardinals since '67...so I have seen the good and the bad throughout their somewhat recent history.

BTW, four outs is nothing.....1 strike away (twice)....
