Pretty interested to see the race for 4th place in the Great 8 between Bomskwad and Chewbaccans. Here's how it's shaping up:
- They're currently tied in the standings for 5th, somehow unable to overcome the since botted Tropicana Flamingos (though that's coming), with Bomskwad having a point differential advantage. Even though Dallas has scored 100 fewer points, the bigger difference comes in the form of their defense, allowing just over 250 less points on the season than Chewy.
- Tonight, Dallas hosts the self-proclaimed tanking x DOMINATE x while Chewy hosts the opportunity to trample over Solana Tides for the second time. Unless x DOMINATE x changes course, I expect them both to be at 6-13 while #3 ranked Miami Cleo rolls over Tropicana, effectively dropping them to 6th, with Dallas slotting in the last play off slot and Chewy seeding 5th.
- Saturday night, Chewy gets to host Tropicana, while Dallas faces a tough matchup with the Gremlins. The 2nd seeded Gremlins handled Dallas fairly easily with both teams playing the same effort in a TV game at the end of January (103-78). It looks like the Gremlins outside scoring is probably just too much for Dallas (I'm not taking into consideration enthusiasm levels here). Post Saturday, Chewy should be in 4th place, with Dallas facing the possibility of relegation with two games to go. Chewy 7-13 and Dallas 6-14.
- Next Tuesday then, comes what could be the back breaker for either side - Chewy travels to The Bomb Factory (great name, by the way) for what should be a sell-out crowd in anticipation of essentially a loser goes home match. In their first matchup, Chewy was able to use an enthusiasm advantage to push past Dallas. If they can somehow play some great defense and/or hope for an off shooting night from 3 for the Bomskwad, there's a chance they could (queue up Mortal Kombat's) "finish him". I personally don't see it and think that Dallas will bomb away in the factory and light Chewy up, evening their total in the win column and pulling ahead in the standings with their point differential advantage.
- We finish up the season with Dallas getting to walk over the Flamingos and Chewy having to host the Gremlins. Coming into the night, they should be tied at 7-14. I'd expect the Gremlins to take care of business and force Chewy into a regulation match with the SuperSonicz while Bomskwad "gets' the opportunity to be demolished by the Ashkickers in the first round of the playoffs.

Glad that was fairly interesting to see - either which way, I have a hard time believing that either team would lose a regulation series against Seattle (sorry to manager iBeStrugglin) - just glad there's the potential for a little bit of drama to wrap up this season!

Guess I'd be remiss to not point out that Chewy hasn't been online since the end of last month...which all but confirms that it should play out the way I anticipate, though, x Dominate x might screw the whole thing apart starting tonight!

Two other games I absolutely should have highlighted before last night - the top two teams in each division playing each other for the rights to the top seed!

Big 8 Faceoff: Scrap Heap vs. Philly Dribble
Scrap Heap Low Posters travelled to Philly's Dribble Bucket for a nearly sold out game (18 seats shy!) having scored a total of 1,885 points and giving up a game average of 76.2 while Philly had scored a league leading 1948 and allowing nearly 81 points per game. Both teams were tied in the standings at 17-1 with Scrap's only loss coming to the Gremlins and Philly's only loss coming from their first matchup with Scrap.

Philly's star guard Max-Philip Woesler came into the game averaging 15 ppg and did his part, scoring 20 points on 60% shooting, including 6 of 6 from the stripe. Forward Phillip Huddleston struggled from the field, shooting 8-21 in 45 minutes with 19 points and contributing 16 total rebounds.

On the other side, Scrap Heaps forward Demyan Charykov scored 26 points on 11-18 shooting in just 32 minutes coupled with Center Su Xiuying's 24 points and 25 rebounds.

In the end, it appears that Scrap Heap's inside scoring overmatched Philly's inside defense with Charykov/Xiuying overmatching Huddleston/Shunhao. Shunhao was dominated on the boards, only picking up 5 rebounds compared to Xiuying's 11 offensive rebounds. Philly also couldn't overcome Scrap's inside defense with their Look Inside offense.

While they were tied at the half, Philly did take a two point lead into the final frame and led by 4 with 6 minutes to go. With 4 minutes to go and Philly leading by one, Woesler tried to grab a defensive rebound, but the ball instead tipped off his finger out of bounds. Backup forward Doktor scored inside for Scrap Heap and followed that up with a foul. After a series of substitutions that brought in backup C Farnsworth for Philly and Scrap Heaps starting big men, Huddleston scored to give them a lead, but backup point guard Simas Santana nailed a three with 2:55 left. Backup Philly forward Kev Walker scored from inside to tie it up at 96. Xiuying grabbed an offensive rebound and tipped it back in to go up 2 and Mack Farnsworth responded with a two pointer from the top of the key.

All tied up at 98 with 1:30 left to go, Scrap heap misses two shots, with Huddleston grabbing a defensive rebound. Fasselli tried a three, but missed and Xiuying grabbed another rebound. Charykov tried a three pointer, but missed and Xiuying grabbed the offensive rebound and puts it back in for a two point lead with 59 seconds left to go, at which point Philly called a time out.

Both teams brought back their starters and Scrap's guard Horyza stole a pass and was immediately fouled. A second foul was called on Shunhao with 50 seconds left, but shortly after that, PG Velasco stole the ball but SF Glicas missed a jumper from the elbow. Two quick fouls later and with 15 seconds left, Bruno Pappalardo hit both free throws to go up four (and essentially seal the deal). Philly calls a 30 second time out and coming out of the break, Woesler scores his final 3 points from the wing. Another quick foul with 8 seconds left and Pappalardo makes 1 of 2, to make it 103-101. With 2 seconds left, Miguel Velasco infuriatingly threw the ball out of bounds. Woesler was forced to foul again and both free throws were made by Pappalardo to make the final 105-101. It's rumoured that Philly's manager Phil_Wings is still heard berating Velasco for missing what appeared to be a wide-open Woesler in the corner for a potential go ahead game ending score!

Quite the finish in the first big game of the night - second one coming right up!

Great 8 Faceoff: The Ashkickers vs. Gremlins
Like the Big 8 matchup, Ashkickers and Gremlins came into this one tied in the standings, with Ashkickers point differential being the difference. Grem's Temple of Doom was nearly sold out, short 50 seats, for a rousing crowd of 17,530. Unfortunately for The Ashkickers, this one wasn't nearly as close, with Gremlins Motion offense and proficient inside defense being too much for Ash. Gremlins came out of the gate hot, scoring 30 points to Ash's 14.

Rene Tuvike hit 3 three pointers in the first period for a total of 13 points and Ramon Pnalver added another 9. On the other side, Ash's Lou Eggleston struggled, only scoring 2 points on 1-8 in the first quarter. Eggleston was able to turn it around, scoring 30 points on 11-29 shooting with 4 three pointers, but it was too little too late. . Forward's Tuvike and Penalver for the Gremlins scored 29 and 23 points respectively, coupling to score 24 points total from three. Ash struggled mightily from 3, scoring only 6 of their 29 shots from beyond the arc.

The Gremlins should win out the rest of their games, putting them at 18-4 heading into the playoffs, and The Ashkickers should win out as well, though will see if Miami Cleo will try to bump them off in the last game or if they'll bide their time until the first round of the play offs and try to surprise them then.

In the other (semi) surprising twist of events last night, x DOMINATE x DOMINATED the Bomskwad last night, beating them by 15 on the backs of C S. Pruett (20 pts, 13 rebounds) and SF J. Gleason (16 pts, 5 ast). None of Dallas's starters scored in double digits, with their young star center C. Calderon only scoring 9 points on 4-12 shooting. Backup PG P. Tireau led the way for the Bomskwad with only 14 points.

So, now, Chewy is in 4th with three games left and Dallas has severely hurt their chances of making the play offs, PLUS, they're currently looking at facing the War Birds in a relegation series, rather than the SuperSonicz, although statistically, both of those teams match up pretty well. Dallas and Chewy are both in the bottom 5 of team salaries, with x DOMINATE x appearing to have retooled their roster to avoid relegation (they now have the highest salary of their top 5 players in the league).

Looking like a Gremlins/Scrap Heap championship. Any thoughts on the eventual champ?

Ugh this is a big one for the Warriors and the Moose. The winner of this likely earns the final playoff spot in the Big 8. Of course that will likely earn the privilege of facing the buzzsaw known as the Low Posters but it also means a guarantee of staying in the division.

At least we both are in control of our playoff fate

Good game - that third quarter was very strange, I think that it should've been closer than it ultimately was. Good luck in the relegation playoffs!

Yeah - that 3rd quarter was definitely the difference maker. Looked like your bigs were just too much for him. Good luck!
