forget about hattrick here, this works diffrent.
For this game not so much info is collected yet, but as far as I know, every player uses all of his skills at some timepoints during a game. So unlike in hattrick where a wingman will never use his scoringskill, in BB even guards use their blocking skills. Notice that this info might be untrue, but this is the impression we have so far.
Depending on the position a player plays he will use some skills more than others ofcourse. Centers will use blocking much more than guards.
Also here in BB the calculations take into account more factors than in hattrick. Here you have the individual player's skills, both attacking and defending players' + teamratings of defending and attacking team.
For teamratings you can read in the rules what will add to what. For instance the guards' outside defense weighs heavely on team outside defense,...
But always keep in mind that apart from team ratings, also the player's own skills are in the formulas, so no skill is totaly useless. It is up to you to decide how important it is for you to have a certain player with a certain skill, and how much money and time you want to spend on getting them there.
First of you should read the rules completely (except maybe the national teams part which is quite long and at this time not relevant for you, you can read that later)
