John Batman "bought" Melbourne for a bunch of blankets.

Many people at the time thought the purchase of Alaska was a bad idea!

Already we were burdened with territory we had no population to fill. The Indians within the present boundaries of the republic strained our power to govern aboriginal peoples. Could it be that we would now, with open eyes, seek to add to our difficulties by increasing the number of such peoples under our national care? The country would be not worth taking as a gift.

In Argentina, we had this corsary, Bouchard, who once took control of Monterrey.
The government of the time ordered him to take what he could and leave, because that land "was too far and wasn't worth it".
That territory is now called California... California!!!!!

John Batman rules!!! Manhattan had a similar purchase, I believe.-

In Bolivia the acquisitive power is still high and the cost of living is extremely low. You can have pretty much everything even with 1MM.

guy was not the sharpest tool in the shed. Spending 150K at a strip club...
keeping 545K in cash, in your car?! keeping 200K in his car? Gambling at casinos.

I wonder how he managed to effectively run his business before the lotto ticket.

"At 55 years old, Whittaker was living a successfully comfortable American life complete with a a net worth of over one million dollars, a well rounded family, great job and healthy grandkids."

I'm surprised he ran a successful business worth 1mil when he mad bad decisions after bad decisions after that lotto ticket.

Koop - don't you see that is what too much money does to you, it rots your brain. Take my boss who is on six figures as an example.

strilfe - Give away California! Brilliant move!

King Calucha - this is off topic even in this of topic thread but I was in Bolivia many years ago and really loved it. It was such a peaceful and serene country, so different from the insanity of Peru or the normality of Chilie which was just like being somewhere in Europe.

trying to hold on to California would have been pretty difficult for Argentina -- unless you guys could have gained control of all the land in between or created a very super-duper navy or became a country that specialized in owning wonderful coastal climates with fertile hinterlands (how 'bout a claim on australia?), i think it probably saved you guys a ton of headaches to have let California go --

not unlike that dude that said he should have walked away from the big lottery winnings, i suppose.

Off topic: I flew into El Alto which is an amazing experience. 4,000 meters is more than twice the height of the highest mountain in Australia and going there right from sea level, when they opened the doors of the plane it is like you are being strangled the air is so thin. We had about a week in La Paz which has to be one of the most beautiful and interesting capitals in South America. This included a trip to Tiawanaco which was amazing. Then we went to Copacobana by lake Titicaca and visited the Islands of the Sun and the Moon. The lake is simply amazing I don't know why it isn't flooded with tourists. Probably spelt everything incorrectly, sorry.

On Topic: If you have a lot of money it can also be a great opportunity to build your arena or finally get a high level trainer with a cheap weekly salary who can save you some money in the long term.

I'm glad you liked it. Although there's way more to see on the other side of the country (the low-hot-wet side). That'd take you at least another week.
By the way, La Paz is not the capital. The capital is Sucre.
