Season 19 Winding Down

I always love Golden Week. April & May are very busy for me in my real life but this week gives a nice break, and provides some time to post an update on the teams progress.

In my last post we had just beaten Prathet Thai by a big margin to start the second round. Since then things have gone downhill quite a bit. The competition has progressively gotten much more difficult and at the same time the team’s form is getting worse each week. We’ve had a rash of injuries and some key starters have had a string of low gameshape.

Our results for the last 3 games:
New Zealand 109 - Nippon 90
Taiwan 119 – Nippon 88
Iran 105 – Nippon 79

Of these games our best chance was against New Zealand but in reality they’re players were just too good for us. The other two teams are far better than us and play at a completely different level. It’s interesting though that despite 3 consecutive losses our ranking has improved 8 spots during that time.

At this point we’ve shown that we have enough quality to be a strong mid-level team but we don’t have enough to compete with the bigger nations. However, we have a number of interesting young players that give us hope that we can get better in a few seasons. There are a couple teams ahead of us still that we should target to try to surpass, New Zealand and Malaysia. I think getting ahead of them would be a huge accomplishment for a country our size.

Our final game is against Australia. We beat them early in the season, but most likely because they were looking past us. Since that loss they have been blowing through everyone. It’s likely them against China in the Asia Finals.

After our last game I will take a look through all of the young prospects to see where they are at. I don’t think any of them are quite ready for National team playing time but it would be nice to get a few of the most promising ones onto the roster. I’ll share updates as we progress on that.

BTW, one of the biggest gameshape dissapointments for us has been Furusawa. Currently his game shape is Mediocre and his manager hasn't signed in since April 6th. I guess his team should BOT on May 21 and he'll be available on the TL.

If anyone wants the #1 Japan National Team player on there roster then start making sure you have money available (Lord Toranga, I know you want this guy). Last time he sold for $2.6M but I can't see him going for that much in the current market.

Ha yes you are right I would love to have him. But I think I have to keep to my strategy for next season. This season my ain was just to stay in the JBBL while banking $250-300,000 a week. Mission achieved. If I hadn't just bought 1,000 more Lower Tier seats I would be near the $4 million mark. Instead I need to really keep the budget under control for another season so I can then be ready to compete with the big teams. I am constanly tempted, wouldn't it be great to have...but so far I have kept to the plan.

Still the good news.
Yusuke Furusawa in terrible GS.
Satashi Hayakawa in bad GS.
Mitsuo Shibukji in bad GS

Only 2 big men on the NT in good GS...
Kaname Kouzuki strong.
Hirofumi Sonoda proficient.

Looks like you have to play my guys!

I agree with this approach, Being disciplined will bring you success.

Yes, thanks to you we weren't starting guards at PF. The biggest thing I've learned in the NT roles is how big an impact GS has on the teams performance. I'm not sure other NT managers recognize this as much.

Season 19 Wrap

After an expected 130-102 loss to Australia with a much depleted roster our season ends at 5-6, a significant improvement from the 2-4 record we had in the last Asia tournament. Despite losing the game our ranking improved two points to 47. In fact, despite losing the last 4 games our ranking improved 10 points over the course of those games. I think this means that while losing we were still performing well relative to our ranking. (Maybe, but I don’t really know how the formula works).

Worth notice, 2 of the teams we beat early in the season (Australia and Philippines) are playing each other in the Semi-finals. I’m guessing Australia will win and I will be rooting for them in the finals.

And, in reference to the title of this thread, I think we can officially say the program has been resurrected, but you guys tell me what you think. Next is to work on building and improving for the future.

As I mentioned in my last post, I think a good long term goal for Nippon is to surpass New Zealand and Malaysia in the rankings. I will set goals for next season once I see our draw, but of course let’s hope to advance to the playoff round.

I will start preparing for the next season from now and will take a look at all the prospects for the team and see how they’ve progressed. There are a couple I have in mind to bring onto the team and there may be some other surprises as well. I think I will carry a

Brilliant work. When you have few choices about players and then some of them are injured or in bad GS it can be hard to progress as well as we may have hoped, but I think everyone will agree you did the best in the circumstances as well as keeping everyone informed and interested. Sonada will be back and KK hopes to be although he knows at age 33 his days will be numbered soon. I do plan to make sue my next trainer has career extention so I hope that will help.

Well done!

I think KK would keep his spot until his skills start slipping or someone else like Yasujiro overtakes him. I'll be making evaluations on roster soon.
