The benefit of depth and better players 4-8 are that you can more easily get your players into better game shape and keep them there.
In playoffs, you're often training GS before the must-win games and are playing your best players 38-42 minutes a game. Doing that in the regular season isn't as viable, so you can't be as top heavy. In a one game matchup, having better top 2-3 players is more important in my opinion.
In BBM/B3 games for example, many teams only play a 7-8 man rotation because those are their best players and minutes don't matter. Looking at the B3 final that happened today, both teams played 7 man rotations and half of the players played 40+ minutes. For league games and weekly minutes, it's not possible to play guys 80+ minutes every week and keep them in good GS, which is where having a more balance team and depth is beneficial.
