Philippines mops the floor with Kazakhstan in Asia Championship Tournament opener – 120 - 79

The Kuta Beach stadium was packed and everyone was raring to get the tournament started. Both teams started the game shaking off the nerves.

It took 5 minutes for Philippines NT to settle down and find a comfortable pace, and right then the engines started roaring as they charged away. The Philippines left Kazakhstan in the dust highlighted by a 6-20 burst to finish the first quarter. Canieso's 5 of 5 shooting performance lead the Philippines as it closed out the first quarter with an 18 -point lead, Canieso had 15pts at the half.

Philippines continued where they left off and went on an 8-0 run to begin the 2nd quarter to push the lead to 26. They continued to have their way with the defence, focusing the action inside the lane for dunks and easy put-backs. Both teams scored more during the succeeding quarters but Philippines NT never got off-track and made shots at a very efficient rate. It's hard to play catch-up when you let your opponent shoot 59% from the field and allow 38 assists which lead to 73% assisted FG rate. Meanwhile, Kazakhstan had no defensive stats in the game, no blocks and no steals.

Kazakhstan were more active on the offensive boards though, out-rebounding the PH big men on the offensive end, Akhmetov and Kazhenbaev combined for 9 of the 18 offensive rebounds which the team converted to 11 points. They shot 34.7% the entire game as they had a hard time getting the ball into the post, often settling for jump shots around the perimeter as second option.

Canieso paced all players with a game-high 23 points, Dalida had 17 points, 5 assists and 2 steals, Montenejo flirted with a triple-double with 14 points, 7 rebounds and 11 dimes and Libre filled the stat sheet like an accountant with 15 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists 2 blocks and 4 angry dunks.

Tleubergenov lead Kazakhstan with a well-rounded line, 21 points 3 rebounds and 5 assists. Zhanymateev had 10 points at the half but only scored 3 points in the second half to end the game with 13 points and pulled down 9 rebounds.

Post-Game Notes:

The frist quarter couldn't have ended in the worst
possible way for the Kazakhs as Sergey Perevertaylo inexplicably fouled Alvin Marapig as he was going for a half-court heave. Marapig made 2/3 at the charity stripe to extend the lead to 18.

Philippines turned this game into a dunk fest, they had 17 dunks total - Libre lead everyone with 4 throw-downs. He used to play for the current NT coach's team but was just sold to a new team a week ago, he played like he had something to prove to his former coach today.

Philippines had more assists in the first quarter (12) than the combined assists for Kazakhstan the entire game (11)

Kazakhstan coach called timeout after consecutive threes from Tongson including a deep 40-footer which inflated the lead to 39-78

Next Opponents:
Philippines vs. Maccau
Kazakhstan vs. UAE

That's all from me and the rest of the NT coaching staff! Stay tuned again next week for updates as Philippines take on Maccau. Philippines' sensational perimeter defense shuts down MACAU, 119-53, sets its sights for 3 in a row against Vietnam next week.

Florian Ignacio shook his head smiling as he was helped up by teammates under the basket. He couldn't believe he was fouled hard on a drive just 5 seconds into the game.

“5 seconds in and suddenly it was the playoffs man! I love it!” he recalled

Two free throws and onto the next possession, this time Tapia drove straight into Xianfa again who helplessly gave up his second personal foul. Xianfa quickly headed to the bench but would return minutes later hoping to redeem himself. That was not the case though as he foolishly commits his second flagrant foul in less than a minute of his appearance on the court. Two flagrant fouls meant an automatic ejection, an ejection meant he would hit the shower room early and watch the rest of the game on TV.

Maccau expected this game to be a jump-shooting contest. Philippines' coach had other things in mind. He realised he could exploit the gaps down the post so he instructed his boys to feed the ball inside to Emerson Tapia and let him earn his minutes. Macau was unprepared to adjust and committed 20 fouls including 2 starters that fouled out before the final buzzer and punctuated by Huang Xianfa's ejection in the game's opening quarter. Philippines shot a total of 32 free throws going 17/17 before the break.

Tapia's double-double lead all Filipinos with 29 points and 11 rebounds, Amante Dorola had 16 points on 6/6 shooting, stepping up nicely for Florian Ignacio who was injured during the first half and did not return. Team doctors later diagnosed him with a mild case of Indonesian food poisoning and is expected to play next week. Meanwhile, big men Libre and Paler feasted on the boards as they pulled down 15 apiece. The Philippines had a +23 advantage on the DRB% rate.

“They lit a fire under us early by playing physical defense, we wanted to show them we’re not afraid of roughing it up out there on the court. Filipinos are so used to rough play, we eat elbows for breakfast!”

Paler commented as he elbows Libre on the chest who just sat down next to his locker to grab his Gatorade.

Macau was lead by big man T. Chaoyu with 14 points, versatile PG P. Yuancheng, who piled 34 big points against Iran last week, struggled to replicate that performance yet put up 14 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. He launched 13 of the team's 34 attempts from 3-point land but none of his shots hit the mark.

Post Game Notes:

Emerson Tapia already had 15 points in the first quarter alone. He made 5 of 6 shots from the field and sunk all five of his free throws.

Philippines may have had less FG attempts than Macau but they were converted at an efficient rate and shot an 60.53 eFG% the entire game.

Stats for nerds:

eFG%
PH: 60.53%
MACAU: 27.78%

DRB%
PH: 83%
MACAU: 60%

The effective field goal percentage (EFG%) is a statistic used in basketball to take into consideration the additional difficulty of three-point shots and the extra points awarded for making a three-pointer. Effective Field Goal Percentage, or eFG%, is calculated the following way:
(2pt FGM + 1.5 * 3pt FGM) / FGA

DRB% is the percentage of available rebounds the defensive team gets. To figure your Defensive Rebounding Percentage, just divide your team's defensive rebounds by the sum of your defensive rebounds, plus your opponent's offensive rebounds:

DRB% = DefReb / (DefReb + OppOffReb)

3 in a row: Philippines keeps composure against Vietnam to notch 3rd consecutive win – 125 - 109

The Philippines may be undefeated in this tournament but they had to dig themselves out of a rut if they were to continue their winning streak. Vietnam stepped on the gas early and took a 12-3 lead to the surprise of the unsuspecting Filipinos. Vietnam relied on steady scoring from T. Nguyên and X. Duong as they combined to score 19 of the team’s 30 points during the opening quarter.

Florian Ignacio took charge in the second canto, shifting into high gear and doing his damage by opening the scoring and assisting his teammates as the Philippines outscored Vietnam 40 – 22 in the 2nd quarter. He finished with 27 points, 8 assists and had 5 threes in 44 minutes of on-court action.

The Philippines continued to rally and took a 33-32 lead after Amante Dorola hit a three at the top of the arc with 10:34 to go in the 2nd. He nailed another open jumper from the wing with 9:44 remaining in the 4th which gave the Philippines its biggest lead at 99-81,. He compiled 16 of his 26 points in the second half.

Emerson Tapia, who replaced Madrigal after an apparent eye injury after he was fouled hard 7 minutes into the game, finished the game with 20 points and 9 rebounds.

Vietnam kept the quarter scoring close as both Vietnamese standouts H. Thiên and L. Nguyên and T. Nguyên kept the deficit at a respectable distance the rest of the way. They also out-hustled their Filipino counterparts on the boards with a +12 rebounding edge.

Both teams converted shots at a high rate, Philippines shot an astounding 60.2% while Vietnam managed to shoot well above average with 53.8%. But the most telling statistic goes to the Assists department where the Philippines outplayed Vietnam 29 to 18.

Lap "El Capitan" Nguyên played all 48 minutes of the game and had a team high 27 points and 7 assists, wing man Ha Thiên followed suit with 25 points and 6 rebounds, Trong Nguyên did a remarkable job on both ends of the floor and double-doubled with 19 points and 15 rebounds.

The Philippines' mettle will be tested again versus rank 17 Iran next week.

Next Game:

Vs. Iran

Hello mga idol! It was a tough season as we failed to reach the semis after being bracketed together with China & Taiwan. I would like to thank everyone who kept their players in perfect shape. Shout out too for the ones who continue to train up their players.

Back to the drawing boards for us. I'll continue to communicate with the managers of potential players for next season and our up and coming players. If you think you have a player that can be helpful for our team please dont hesitate to drop me a PM. Thanks for the support mga idol! 😊
