Asian Championship Round 1

Starting the group stage taking on Pakistan was an easy start to the season for the return manager Mickyster and his team. With a group seeing the team take on China in the final game of stage 1 and a danger game in round 4 vs Indonesia there was not a lot of pressur eon the ten players selected to start the season.

While the Pakistan PG Entezari was about to put on 25 points his side was never in the game. The Hamburger man lead the scorer for Australia with a total of 8 players scoring double digits and th other 2 getting 9 and 7 points. With a solid team performance the side showed its versatility and pointed to a good season to come.

With more players being added as the season progresses players on the verge or making the side will be doing their best to develop their skills and get into gameshape fitness to improve their chances of getting the call up.

With a number of the main players from previous seasons getting bit older a few spaces in the squad will be opened to younger players in a development role to help them develop into our future stars.

A double double from Harley say him get MoM award for theopening game and take an early lead in player of the year awards.

3 points – G. Harley (15 pts, 12Rb)
2 points – J Hamburger (16 pts)
1 point – R. Melmeth (12 pts, 14 rb)

Round 2 sees a game versus New Zealand and Bob Grief coming backing the squad to provide more options at the guard positions.

Game 2 of the Asian Championship saw Australia taking on New Zealand before the bye week. The side obvious already had their minds on the break and came up against a Kiwi side who looked like the only on court trying to win. This resulted in the Ozzie side finishing the 1st period down by 12 points in a game it looked like they just had to turn up to win. The team tried to rally and kept trying but could not get back into the game.

It was not till the final period that the Kiwis seemed to run out of steam and some key players allowed the team to close the gap finally getting the lead in the last 5 minutes and managing to get the win 114 to 108 after winning the final period by 14 points.

With a poor performance the current squad has been put on notice to improve their match fitness and performance for their clubs or have the spots taken in the side moving forward.

Player of the Match

3 – B. Grief (21 pts, 8 ast, 5 rb) Bob was called into the side after some good early form and replayed the managers faith in him by showing the leadership needed.

2 – S. Thomas (19 pts, 10 rb, 4 ast) Thomas made a clutch shot to get the side in front and is turning into a real leader in the side taking over from the older guard.

1- R. Melmeth (19 pts, 9 rb) The Methhead is one of the older bigs in the side and until he fouled out was a force down low and provided production on both end of the floor.

Round 3 sees the side with the bye.

Game 3 Vs Thailand

Taking the low ranked Thailand side the Australian team looked to move the ball. While the passing was good the team while always in front did not blow the opposition away as much as some expected. It was some strong foul issues to a number of Australia players giving the Thailand side 36 free throws and their winning the boards the Australian side was able to get a close win 108 to 88.

Melmeth was dominated inside early but fouling out early in the 2nd half put some pressure on the big rotation which affected the teams energy with their rebounding.

POM
3 - C. Xingui coming off the bench with a team leading 18 points giving the team the spark off the bench needed.
2 – R. Melmeth was a major force inside like always unitl being fouled out.
1 – K Scully – Did not miss a shot all day making 5 from 5 and also added 6 rebounds, 4 assists and no fouls.

Game 4 Vs Indonesia

Heading into the round there were 3 undefeated teams in the group and the loser of this game would make it only 2 left. While the Indonesian side tried to focus the defence in stopping Melmeth inside the team pushed the ball up court and with the addition of the recalled Gingut to the side and Hamburger moving back to his preferred 2 spot the side was able to find open shots all over the court with the 3 players combining for 81 points as the team won 121 to 104 on a much more disciplined performance.

POM
3 – G, Gingut combined 27 points with 5 assists and 3 steals providing the team with a huge increase in energy at both ends of the court.
2 – R. Melmeth team leading 32 points with 11 rebounds getting yet another double double adding a few assist also in much more disciplined games.
1 – J. Hamburger – returning the 2 spot allowed him to space the floor with solid outside shots as well as taking the ball to the rim.

The team is yet to face China which will decided who leads the group into the 2nd phase of the championship. Some supporters have let it be known they are not happy with the running of the team but failed to speak up and offer solutions as what could be done better. This lack of support for the team partly lead to the one of the most successful managers of the team leaving after last season.

Sounds a bit unfair considered you haven't lost a game so far. Don't let it affect you! And love the reports, even though I don't reply most of the time.

Thanks
I know Jay was feeling like if someone has an issue just speak up. The day I was elected people had already put in a vote of disapproval.

Thanks

That's 2 big wins in a row with beating China, Philippines and now Hong Kong at their home. And Hong Kong put more into the game. So to overcome both HCA and extra effect is a big result.
Still some games to go but nice to be getting the wins.
