Do the initial 5 balls sort of represent how good his starting skills will be then?
Its actually his salary not the skills. 5balls now after updates means somewhere between 2800+ salary but his skills can be crappy for example he is center with all atrocious but with respectable 3 inside skills looks like this:
js 1 jr 1
od 1 hndl 1
dr 1 pa 1
is 7 id7
rb7 sb1
Or could be something like mine player who i drafted 6 seasons ago and which won this years league mvp leading team to div 2:
js7 jr 6
od7 hndl7
dr5 pa7
id7 id 6
rb6 sb6
very sick 64 skillpoints

Btw he was listed as SF and i risked. Mostly the SF's have the lowest skillpoints considering to their salary, next ones are centers especially if their height is like 7 feet or more.
Personally i not used to look at the stats line when drafting a player before but now after 10 seasons experience i do. Its tru stats arent 100 percent reflective of the player skills especially if he played low amount of minutes. But there is a colleration undoubtelly. For example if he played 20 mins and other dude played 45 you can expect the first one to have stamina around 2-4 while the second one around 4-7. The same goes for shot accuracy, stolen ball, rebs, sb. If the stats line is flooded in every category with some results not the 0's then the guy will be multiskilled with high skillpoints. If stats line is like just turnovers, some 50 percent shooting, no 3pts no free throws, sb or steals, or rebs, or asists he is likely gona be low skillpoints even if his salary is high (examples above).
ALso i like to draft A+ players despite their potencial just after the 5/5 5/4 or 4/4 ones. Cause you mostly get them in 3rd oir 2nd round and even despite they are low potencial and you wont train them they have high skillpoiints, high salary and can very efficiently play garbage time , they can be excellent 8-12th man players and also increase ur merchandise abit.
