I find the box score principally useful as a means of gathering data on opposition players, ie. which of their players are good defenders and scorers. As a guide to your own players there's the player rating stat, but this doesn't reflect how objectively good a player is but subjectively how well he played on the day.
eg. Muirhead, Jonathan 28 13 - 23 5 - 11 4 - 4 1 8 4 1 1 0 2 35 9.0
That's a good day at the office for one of my guards in a blow-out victory (off the bench to boot!)
Muirhead, Jonathan 21 5 - 9 2 - 3 2 - 3 1 1 0 0 0 0 6 14 7.0
Not such a good performance. Rating is lower because he fouled out and contributed nothing outside of his points. The two games were about 10 days apart.
