You have 2-3 and 3-2 zones to focus on inside or outside, with 1-3-1 being the extreme outside focused defense, so why not add box-and-one for games where you want to focus extremely on inside defense?

The box-and-one (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Box-and-one_defense) is not to focus on inside defense. The box-and-one has four men playing zone ("the box") and one playing playing man defense against the offensive teams best scorer. It seeks to shut down the best player on the offense...he could be a post player, but also he could be a wing player.

In order to implement it, you'd need to select the defense and then the defender and scorer to match up man-to-man.

Which brings me to something that I've mentioned before -- were does BB needs to go. Basketball is a game of match-ups and ultimately, you'd like to allocated defenders to guard certain players on the other team, rather than have the PG guard the PG, SG guard the SG etc.

I agree with that. i mean right now i know very well some of my opponents, and some teams have a Go To Guy, normally i put the best defender to defende him, but with that option we could have much more options when doing the tactics.

I think ultimately, if you're playing man-to-man (or other non-zone defenses), you need to be able to rank your top inside defenders and top outside defenders and match them up accordingly with your opponents player.

This could either be done manually or perhaps just have the game engine handle it automatically (might make more sense) and it wouldn't make setting your match order that complicated.

Thanks for the clarification on the box-and-one, haven't watched a game in awhile, and good point about the matchups. I'd also like to see more varied shotblocking, instead of everyone rejects their own man. Obviously there's exceptions to EVERY rule, and not every team will follow the pg leads in assists, c leads in blocks template to the letter, but for the most part center and power forward should own the paint, or at least try to if they're not that good, contesting everybody's layups and screaming "NOT IN MY HOUSE BOOOOYYYY!!" :p

I'd actually like to see this type of thing in the match report.

Eh, the BBs would have to add a tag notifying the block.

Then your wish is our command

Wouldn't mind seeing that either

Agreed. I don't think implementing a 'match-up' feature in the Game Tactics page would be so difficult. And it would really add up realism in the game.

While I like the matchup concept, how would training be done?

Suppose you are training inside defense. You start your trainees at PF and C. However, your best defender is your PF. You match him against the other team's top scorer, his SF. Does your PF get inside defense training while he's guarding the other team's SF, a position not covered by the C/PF choice of training. In addition, does your SF get inside D training because you have matched him against the other team's PF?

This change is more complicated than has been discussed above.

I don't think it presents any more problems than we have now. I mean, if you're training inside or outside shooting and your trainee never takes a shot during the game, he still gets training, right?
